东汉初年，赤眉军首领樊崇得知光武帝刘秀不杀降将的消息后，就率领傀儡皇帝刘盆子及丞相徐宣等30多万人前来投降，刘秀宽待他们，赏给他们饭菜吃，问他们是否真心投降，徐宣等表示真心归顺，刘秀认为他们是铁中之钢、人中佼佼者。
