宋大名莘县人，字定国，自号清虚。王素子。神宗时历官太常博士，坐与苏轼游，谪监宾州盐酒税。司马光执政，为宗正寺丞，旋通判扬州。哲宗末，坐事编管全州。徽宗时，列名元祐党籍。生平练达世务，好臧否人物，议论时政，屡遭贬逐。诗文为苏轼兄弟所推重。有《闻见近录》、《甲申杂记》、《随手杂录》。
