莫奏开元旧乐章，乐中歌曲断人肠。
邠王玉笛三更咽，虢国金车十里香。
一自犬戎生蓟北，便从征战老汾阳。
中原骏马搜求尽，沙苑年来草又芳。
开元后乐鉴赏
首联诗歌的第一句幽怨深邃：不要再奏响那些霓裳羽衣舞和秦王破阵舞曲（虽然出现在李世民时代，但是开元时期仍在演绎），那是过去《忆昔》的回忆，想到这些，那辉煌的时代，对比此时兵荒马乱，“路有冻死骨”的惨景，真是悲从心起。
颔联写两处场景的不同比较，王室后孙却遭遇软禁，生不如死，在三更尚不能眠，笛声哽咽，催人泪下，而那单单一个虢国夫人的车马，就是贴金镶钻，所谓宝马香车，暗示开元时候的物质生活糜烂，更飘逸出了夫人使用的熏香。两处对比烘托出唐朝政治失利者的悲哀和当朝者和宠臣们的逍遥。
颈联安禄山的胡人背景有《胡旋舞》为证，大概的词句为，“内有太真外禄山”。因此，说他们是蛮夷之乱也不为过。安禄山在蓟北筑城招兵买马，贮存武器钱粮，谋反叛变，汾阳王郭子仪不顾年事已高，开始出战。
尾联最后一句，诗人发忧古之思，看到凄惨情景，不由叹声遽然，战事连连，中原的男儿被抓为壮丁当兵，连骏马都搜求一空；年复一年，月复一月，岁月变迁，沙苑之战，以少胜多，取得胜利。但是这一切过去，意义也不过如此。老百姓死的死，亡的亡，只有这青草还在生长，其他的都转瞬即逝。
这首诗采用以小见大的写法，从开元后乐讲音乐这个题目，写出唐代兴衰的大感触来。这种以小见大，还有见微知著的作用。

薛逢，字陶臣，蒲洲河东（今山西永济县）人，会昌元年（公元八四一）进士。历侍御史、尚书郎。因恃才傲物，议论激切，屡忤权贵，故仕途颇不得意。《全唐诗》收录其诗一卷。《旧唐书》卷一九零，《新唐书》卷二零三皆有传。
