古木卧平沙，摧残岁月赊。
有根横水石，无叶拂烟霞。
春至苔为叶，冬来雪作花。
不逢星汉使，谁辨是灵槎。

译文
一棵古树横卧在沙地之上，它备受摧残树龄已经老大。
树根横穿进石缝中寻求水分，也没有叶子来拂动烟霞。
春天到了枝上滋生苔藓当叶子，冬天枝上落雪如开花。
没有遇到银河的使者，谁能辨认出这就是上天的木筏？
注释
平沙：指广阔的沙原。
岁月：年月。泛指时间。赊：久远。
水石：指流水与水中之石。
烟霞：烟雾；云霞。
春至：春天来到。
星汉：指天河，即银河。
灵槎（chá）：能乘往天河的船筏。槎：木筏。

古木卧平沙创作背景
此诗《文苑英华》卷一八七入“省试”类。《石仓历代诗选》卷三十三，题前有”试“字。清人试律诗选本，亦多选之。此题唐人存诗仅此一首。从王泠然无落第记载，极其中第后经历诸多而年寿不永推测，此诗极有可能即是开元五年（717年）应试时所作。

古木卧平沙鉴赏
此诗首联上句直接从正面破题，下句承写诗题中之“古”字，一“赊”字形容年代久远，是对“古”字的申写，同时总起全诗。次联主要具体描写古木的卧姿。一“横”字暗暗点题。三联上句承写二联下句的“无叶”二字。此联从不同的时间角度描写古木，不言古木无叶无花，而言其春以苔为叶，冬以雪为花，极其巧妙灵动，得艺术辩证法三昧。然而，无论春夏秋冬，古木始终无叶无花，毫无生机，人们不禁要问：如此古木又有何用？这便逗出末联作一突起，指出此木乃良材，只可惜不遇伯乐而已。此联在这一表层意义的背后，蕴藏着作者的寄托，表达了作者渴望得到赏识，以有所作为的迫切愿望。
此诗产生的时代比较早，八句，与一般试律诗的六韵十二句略不同，为后人提供了有唐早期试律之范本。
