君王不可见，芳草旧宫春。
犹带罗裙色，青青向楚人。
春草宫怀古鉴赏
春草宫是隋炀帝所建的离宫，它的故址在江苏省江都县境内。宫以春草命名，可见此地春色芳草之浓盛。此诗也正是从芳草春色入笔，就春色芳草的点染来抒发怀古之情。
自然的规律是严峻无情的，历史的法则是严峻无情的，曾不可一世的隋炀帝终被人民前进的激浪吞没。面对久已消沉的隋宫废殿遗墟，诗人在首句发出“君王不可见”的感慨，这既是对历史法则的深刻揭示，也同时深含着对暴君隋炀帝的鞭笞。昔日豪华的楼台亭阁早已不见，唯有茂盛的“芳草”在“旧宫”废墟中迎着春日疯长着，“芳草”是作者在诗中展示的最显著最明亮的可见物，这是紧扣诗题“春草宫”而来的，“芳草”二字不仅仅形象地展示出昔日“春草宫”今貌，而且也十分巧妙地把伤今怀古的主题自然顺畅地引入了自然的法规和历史的法则序列中。“春草宫”虽然在历史的进程中成为废殿遗墟，但一年一度草木枯荣，春色依然浓烈地妆扮着这里。
“罗裙色”是从第二句中的“芳草”联想而引出来的，“芳草”在春色中的艳丽和花枝招展，自然使人想起昔日这里宫妃罗裙颜色，“犹带”从语法上来看把“芳草”与“罗裙”进行了自然地承上启下式的连接，而更主要的是把读者的思路从眼前所见之景物而一下子转入对历史的回顾和思考中去，从诗意上紧紧地扣住了“怀古”的诗题，结句“青青向楚人”，又从历史的回顾中回到眼前“青青”的“芳草”，春回人间青青的芳草随意根植生长在楚地，它的心意还是向着“楚人”的。昔日春草宫所在的江都古为东楚地，所以诗人把这里的人称为“楚人”，这自然是从“怀古”的角度，把笔锋扩展得很远，伸到历史的深层中去了。人民是历史的主人，自然历史前进的轨迹是向着人民心愿的。诗人在这里把“青青”的“芳草”拟人化，是为请出这里的自然景物作证来阐明历史前进的严峻轨迹。年年春意宛然，而惟不见当年的隋炀帝，结句不仅补足了句首之意，而且使诗意也进入了一个回环往复的奇妙境界之中。

刘长卿(约726 — 约786)，字文房，汉族，宣城（今属安徽）人，唐代诗人。后迁居洛阳，河间（今属河北）为其郡望。玄宗天宝年间进士。肃宗至德中官监察御史，后为长洲县尉，因事下狱，贬南巴尉。代宗大历中任转运使判官，知淮西、鄂岳转运留后，又被诬再贬睦州司马。德宗建中年间，官终随州刺史，世称刘随州。
